Arvell Malcolm Jones has been drawing comics for a long time, his earliest work appears in Marvel Comics’ Marvel Premiere #20-22 (Jan.-May 1975), drawing the martial arts superhero Iron Fist he also co-created the character MISTY KNIGHT, along with Tony Isabella for the Iron Fist series. He’s drawn for Marvel such titles as, Deathlok, Thor, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Avengers, Daredevil, Captain America, and more. Jones began worked for DC Comics on a short 10 page stories for DC Specials and Giant Books of Legion of Super Heroes before getting his own series Super-Team Family 1976-77 which the majority of issues were reprinted as the Countdown Special in mid 2000’s, he also worked on All-Star Squadron in the mid-1980s, penciling the majority of the issues released between 1985 – 1987 starting with issue #37 while working at a local Detroit TV Station designing news graphics, animation and promotions. He returned to comics to draw fill-in issues of Blood Syndicate, Hardware, before co-creating and drawing the first 6 issues of Kobalt for Milestone Media Inc. Arvell’s brother Desmond asked him to help him found a new graphic design studio called Alternative Design Inc. which later in 1990 became Alternative Design Advertising Inc.working for such clients as IBM, The State of Michigan and the House of Seagrams. Arvell left the agency to co-found one of the first Internet Development Companies in the U.S. called impact! interactive! Inc. servicing MCI- News Corp Joint Ventures, Microsoft MSN, and other Fortune 500 companies. impact! merged with another company which became in 1999 became a publicly traded company called Fantasticon.com Inc. After leaving he formed a mulimedia production company Encode Media Group Inc.. and worked as a producer for TV shows such as Totally Twisted Flix, The Movie Show Plus, DocU-This and then held the titled of Vice President of Development for CoLours TV. He has been Adjunct Faculty professor in the Illustration Department at the College For Creative Studies. He also has worked as a storyboard artist for a film production company called Maxsar Digital Studios. Now serves as company president for the revampedvideo production company called Encode Entertainment LLC. Between all of that he still finds time to teach and mentor interested artists in working in the comic field where he co-created the 25 year old running Comic Art Workshop. In 2016 – 2018, Netflix featured Arvell’s co-created characters Raymond ‘Piranha’ Jones, Dontrell ‘Cockroach’ Hamilton, as well as Mercedes ‘Misty’ Knight has been featured in multiple Netflix TV series; Luke Cage ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3322314/?ref_=ttfc_fc_tt ), The Defenders ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4230076/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 ) and Iron Fist season 2 ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3322310/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) . In 2018, Arvell’s concept work appears as posters for the Marvel Studios Black Panther theatrical movie. During this time Arvell has been featured on a Magazine cover BLAC magazine, and appeared on American Black Journal on PBS and Robert Kirkman’s Secret history of Comics on AMC. He returns to Comics and Graphic Novels working on commissions for fans and several both film, comics and Indy projects; in 2019 the San Diego comic con international project exclusive “The Reign of the Underdog featuring Lazarus” and an unreleased project originally due in 2020.
